Report from David Messina

08.10.13

David Messina was joined by fellow Australian Damien Norton and South African Grant Glanfield for 4 days fishing with Captain Zak Conde in early October.

While conditions were challenging at times Zaks skills and commitment to finding fish prevailed and over the 4 days two blue marlin weighing 425lbs and 250lbs were landed. In addition 1 yellowfin tuna weighing approximately 250lbs and 4 big eye tuna weighing 300lbs each were added to the tally, including a double hookup, to make a total of 7 prize fish in 4 days. Another 10 fish were raised during the busy sessions including multiple strikes on both teasers and lures.

Given the fishing occurred at the end of the season it was a great result and a return trip is already scheduled for 2014.

Thanks to Captain Zak Conde and wireman Andrew Kennedy for a great trip.

EMAIL FROM LARS AND JENS.

23.07.13

Having fished for Sea trout, Salmon and Pike for our entire lives and with a 50 year birthday coming up we finally decided to do what we always dreamed of. Fish for Blue Marlin.

Searches on the Internet told us that the best chances to hook a Blue Marlin was on Cap Verde.

We found Zak Conde and managed to book his last week for the season.

We spent four great days of fishing with Zak and his crew Shy and Alex.

We started early Sunday and Zak took us directly to Sao Nicolau were we almost immediately hooked a fish. Lars was in turn because of the fact that it was his 50 years birthday. After some commotion, with Alex having to jump into the water, Lars landed a 300 lbs Blue Marlin.

We spent the night at a very nice small guest house on Sao Nicolau.

Next day it was Jens turn. After a slow morning a Marlin finally struck at noon. The fish was smaller this time but still a Blue Marlin! 140 lbs.

We did not manage to land any more Blues during our four days but we had a number of strikes and lots of excitement.

We came to catch Blue Marlins and Zak delivered.

Apart from the fishing we had a great time with Zak and the crew. We are definitely hooked on Marlin fishing and intend to do this again. Maybe the Azores with Zak next time.

Zak and his crew are highly professional and we warmly recommend them if you seriously want to catch Blue Marlin.

Best Regards, Lars & Jens

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS

16.07.13

HELLO TO ALL FROM THE AZORES, YES FROM THE AZORES

THIS MORNING I JUMPED ON THE PLANE FROM LISBON TO HORTA, BUT I ENDED UP IN TERCEIRA ISLAND, LOW CLOUDS IN HORTA FORCED THE CAPTAIN TO LAND THERE.

NICE TO BE BACK IN PORTUGUESE TERRITORY AND SPECIALLY IN THE AZORES, THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ISLANDS IN THE ATLANTIC.

MY LAST FOUR DAYS IN THE CAPE VERDE WITH OUR GOOD FRIENDS FROM SWEDEN, LARS AND JENS, WENT THE BEST WAY ON THE FIRST TWO DAYS FISHING. FIRST TIME BLUE MARLIN FISHING , AND THE RESULT CANT BE BETTER. BOTH LANDED A BLUE, A LITTLE ONE AROUND 140LBS TO JENS AND A 300 TO LARS.

GREAT FUN WITH THIS BOYS, THEY ARE HOOKED UP ON THE GAME. BIG THANKS FOR BEING FISHING WITH US AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU GUYS IN A NEAR FUTURE.

WE HAD 2 OUT OF 7 BITES IN TWO DAYS, THE LAST ZERO.

WAS A HARD SEASON TO ALL THIS YEAR, TWO BOATS REACHED THE NUMBER 100 FOR THE SEASON.

THE BIG OH, THE PRIVATE BOAT OF GRAY WITH RONNIE ON THE HELM HAD A GOOD ONE, THEY SPENT A COUPLE OF THOUSANDS EUROS IN FUEL, TRAVELLING ALL OVER AND IN A GOOD WAY, SEARCHING FOR THE FISH, THANKS TO THAT BOYS WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR US TO GET A COUPLE MORE. I SAID THIS BECAUSE THE FISH WASNT AT THE NORMAL TIME ON THE NORMAL SPOTS, SO IT WAS NICE TO HAVE RONNIE GOIN ALL OVER AND FIND THE FISH VERY QUICK.

WE FINISHED OUR SEASON WITH 132 BLUES, BIGGEST ONE ESTIMATED AT 1100PLUS .

NEXT SEASON WE WILL HAVE A SECOND BOAT AND BOOKINGS ARE OPEN.

REGARDS AND GOOD FISHING TO ALL AND THANKS TO THE PEOPLE WHO FISHED ON BOARD OF AMELIA.

HERE A REPORT OF MY GOOD FRIENDS JOHN AND CHRISSIE.

24.06.13

Chrissie and I fished with Zak in Cabo Verde for 8 days, 16-23 June. We caught 10 marlin from 200 to 650 lbs.. we raised three marlin at a time twice and we had 2 marlin on (double hook-ups) twice out of the three double strikes. On the third day we raised 15 marlin though we only caught two of them.

Highlights were the baseball field size schools of flying fish airborne in formation like giant flocks of geese and a super marlin that ate the largest hookless teaser and stripped that bridge teaser reel of all line and broke the base never to be seen again. We raised 3 or more fish everyday but one.

Advise: Our Sea-Band, anti-nausea, ginger gum kept sea sickness away in the worst conditions encountered on the the South Bank and each day. Switch-baiting for ourselves added a whole new dimension to the total experience.

All excellent and unforgettable, also for the valuable suggestions you kindly gave me just as an old and genuine friend of mine.

Thanks to your crew guys Chi and Nick as well.

ONE SPEARFISH AND TWO YELLOWFINS

10.06.13

HELLO TO ALL FROM SAO NICOLAU ISLAND,

FIRST OF ALL I LIKE TO SAY SORRY FOR THE DELAY ON THE REPORTS.

THIS IS THE REPORT FROM THE TRIP OF ANDREY AND HIS FATHER, RUSSIA. ANDREY FISHED 5 DAYS AND THE SCORE WAS NOT THE BEST BUT COMPARED WITH THE OTHER BOATS WE DID GOOD. WE HAD 8 BITES AND CAUGHT 5, RAISED ONE MORE WHICH DIDNT BITE. ANDREY DID A GREAT JOB ON THE PITCH, GOOD FUN. WEATHER WAS NOT THE BEST, STRONG WIND AND BIG WAVES. A BIG THANKS TO ANDREY AND HIS FATHER TO COME YEAR AFTER YEAR TO FISH WITH US. NASTROVIA, DONT KNOW IF THAT IS THE CORRECT WAY, BUT MEANS CHEERS.

REGARDS FROM MY GOOD FRIEND PATRICK AND THE BOYS, SWEDEN. WE FISHED LAST YEAR WITH BAD RESULT SO HE DICIDE TO COME BACK. PATRICKS DREAM WAS TO GET A MARLIN AND HE DID AND HIS FRIENDS ALSO. WE HAD 13 BITES, RAISED ANOTHER 4 WHICH DIDNT SWITCH. ALSO ONE SPEARFISH FOR PATRICK AND TWO YELLOWFINS, AROUND 100LBS. ON PATRICKS LAST DAY HE GOT A SOLID 600LBS ON THE PITCH, GREAT FIGHT, 1 HOUR AND 40 MIN ON STAND UP 50LBS. OTHER BLUES WERE 400 TO 250 THE SMALLEST. THE BOYS HAD GREAT FUN. WE FISHED IN SANTO ANTAO, NORTH WEST BANK AND SAO PEDRO, LOTS OF TRAVELLING, FISHING HAS BEEN UP AND DOWN.

THREE DAYS AGO THE BIG OH CAUGHT 10 IN SAO NICOLAU, NEXT DAY WE WENT THERE AND WE CAUGHT JUST ONE BLUE, THAT WAS YESTERDAY WITH OUR NEW GUEST FROM US. A NICE 400 PLUS ON THE PITCH.

ANOTHER BOAT CAUGHT JUST ONE FISH ALSO, ITS JUST AMAZING HOW THINGS CHANCE SO FAST FROM ONE DAY TO THE OTHER.

OUR SCORE FOR THE SEASON IS 111 BLUES, NOT BAD BUT LESS THAN I HAD EXPECTED. WE LOST PLENTY OF FISH THIS YEAR, CIRCLE HOOKS DONT WORK THE BEST FOR US, BETTER DAYS WILL COME. LURE FISHING HAS BEEN REAL BAD, ANDY MOYES LURES HAVE BEEN OUT EVERY DAY DOING THEIR JOB. FISH LIKE WHAT ANDY DOES, ITS PROBABLY THE BEST LURE OUT THERE. MAKAIRA LURES FROM JUSTIN ARE ALSO GREAT. STILL HAVE NOT USED YOUR LURES, THE ONES YOU SENT LAST YEAR ARE IN THE AZORES AND THE NEW ONES STILL IN PALM BEACH.

WE STILL HAVE DAYS AVAILABLE FOR NEXT YEAR, SO BE FAST AND BOOK FOR THE BEST TIME.

WILL RUN THE BOATS NEXT YEAR UNTIL AUGUST. AMELIA OR THE BOCA RATON ARE FOR LEASING, ANY ONE INTERESTED ON THAT SEND AN EMAIL.

GOOD FISHING FOR MY FRIENDS IN THE CANARIES AND MADEIRA. HOPE YOU GUYS HAVE A GOOD YEAR.

Hi Zak,

Long time has passed & we miss you. Just read your latest story in Marlin Magazine and we are very proud that you were an important part of our life.. Every time we read an article about you in a magazine, we become more & more happy about the situation.

Keep up the good work: You decided to adopt Cape Verde and you are now putting Cape Verde on the world fishing map and making it be recognized as one of the best fishing location in the world.

Deborah & I are doing well. Deborah takes care of me as I have had cancer in each of my lungs over 2 years. I am still alive and breathing (against all odds).

Best of luck,

Jerry & Deborah

THANK YOU AND BE ALIVE FOR MANY YEARS WITH LOVE YOUR FRIEND ZAK

report from lorenzo

10.04.13

"hello everybody from Lorenzo Mauro Maurizio and Walter,we passed 5 fishing days for the first time on amelia with ezequiel conde.

Wonderful days on sao antao island where we sleeped in two great villages. The first at tarrafal where two europeans owned a lovely structure. The second village, 5 miles at north, directed by local peaple, with no aspectatives and with an exellent way to cook. The sea has been rough but for this reason we had more fun then the normal. we released 8 on 17 blu and fished a whoo in the north/west bank. we give all these to captain zak wich sails and maneuver in optimal way and to nick and xi always efficent kind and free for every questions.

we remember the holiday rich of the adventurose experiences, hoping to return there as soon as possible.

Lorenzo."

INTERVIEW: CAPTAIN ZAK CONDE

10.01.13

(Interview from: http://www.fishtrack.com/features/interview-captain-zak-conde_90677)

Fishing out of the port of Mindelo in the Cape Verde Islands

Captain Zak Conde and crew experienced a record breaking 2012 fishing season. Fishing aboard the 36-foot Bertram "Amelia", Zak and his crew released 329 blue marlin during an 8 month season, almost certainly setting a single-season world record for blue marlin releases.

The previous record, also set in Cape Verdean waters several years ago, was 297 releases by Captain Dave Nolhigan. Fishtrack recently spoke to Zak about his crew's remarkable achievement and insights he has gleaned from years spent fishing some of the most fertile waters on the planet.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in the town of Horta, the premier spot for blue marlin fishing in the Azores.

How many days a year do you spend on the water fishing for marlin and other big game species?

We fish for blue marlin at least 150 days a year.

Who introduced you to big game fishing?

My good friend Captain Les Gallagher used to eat at the restaurant where I worked when I was 19 years old. I always asked him if there were any jobs available on his fishing boat, and eventually he said yes. The rest is history.

How do you choose between using live-bait and trolling artificial lures for billfish?

I prefer to use live bait for marlin when I find large schools of baitfish holding above bottom structure.

Does lure color play a major role in determining your spread while targeting billfish?

I always like to use dark colored lures when targeting big marlin.

What else affects fishing for marlin?

The moon phase can affect marlin fishing in areas where there are considerable tide changes. A full or new moon creates stronger tides, which can trigger a strong marlin bite. In Cape Verde, the marlin go deeper in the water column during the full moon.

When a big blue is hooked up, do you like to keep the boat moving forward, or back down to follow the fish immediately after the bite?

Regardless of the size of marlin on the line, I like to back down and turn towards the fish as soon as possible. If we have a big girl on the line that we plan on taking, we will back off on the drag and take extra time to tire the fish.

Does water temperature play a an important role while targeting billfish?

Yes, sea surface temperature is very important while marlin fishing. Marlin prefer water temperatures around 25 degrees celsius (77 degrees fahrenheit) in the Cape Verde islands.

Do you prefer to use monofilament or braid for your main line?

I use Dacron with a monofilament top shot.

How long is the drop back while trying to hook a marlin on live bait?

I like to let a marlin run with a live bait for about 30ft before setting the hook. Obviously there is no need to use a drop back when using lures.

When releasing a large blue marlin, what is the safest way to remove the hook from its mouth while next to the boat?

Regardless of the size of a marlin, they can give you a hard time next to the boat. When using a single rig, I like to use my hands to remove the hook, but it is better to use a hook remover when using double hook rig.

Are there certain signs that indicate that billfish might be in the area?

Yes, the main signs I look for are bait and current. After a couple passes through an area, we usually know if there will be marlin around.
